Cork Seals the Show at Concours Mondial

The 25th Concours Mondial, the world’s largest travelling wine show, was held from May 10 to 14, 2018 in Beijing, China. And although the venue for this illustrious event may change every year, one aspect that remains the same is that the majority of the wines entered are sealed with cork stoppers.

This year 9 180 wines from 48 countries were entered of which 95% were sealed with cork stoppers. What makes this especially significant is that producers entering competitions such as Concours Mondial enter their premium wines into the show, underscoring the fact of the preference for cork as a top-end, high-quality closure of choice.

Considered one of the largest wine events in the world, it was held for the first time in Asia and featured a jury of more than 300 journalists, buyers, winemakers and sommeliers.

“These data confirm the clear preference of world wine producers for cork, as seven out of ten bottles are sealed with a cork stopper,” said João Rui Ferreira, President of APCOR the international generic body for cork marketing.

In the case of China, this option is even more evident when the latest studies conducted by Nielsen indicate that 95% of the top 100 best-selling wines in China are sealed with cork.

“According to these data, cork stoppers occupy a comfortable position in a market that is very competitive, which motivates us to maintain and even intensify the communication effort in the different markets,” says João Rui Ferreira.

The top ten countries to have won a medal this year are France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, China, Chile, South Africa, Greece, Switzerland and Bulgaria. For more information on Concours Mondial visit
